MESSAGE FROM IPBA PRESIDENT
|
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to attend the Inter-Pacific Bar Association's 2007 Annual Conference in Beijing.
We are excited to be holding the 2007 Annual Conference in the capital of what must surely be one of the world's most fascinating and dynamic countries. Much like the IPBA, China has come a long way over the last decade. Two hundred years ago, it accounted for approximately one-third of the world's GDP. Now, the West is watching as China again rises to reclaim its economic powerhouse status, opening its doors to become one of the fastest-growing economies and the destination of choice for investors and tourists alike.
China's legal sector has also undergone a dramatic transformation. When I first traveled to Beijing in 1988 as part of a delegation of intellectual property lawyers, there were no private law firms in China. Today, there are more than 11,000 firms and counting. The IPBA President Elect, Mr Gao Zongze, is a partner at China's largest law firm King & Wood, which was founded in 1993 and has over 400 lawyers. With the emergence of China's legal sector we are pleased to be welcoming new members to the IPBA who add considerably to the depth and quality of our networks.
Those of you who attended last year's Annual Conference hopefully came away with a strong sense of having taken part in an extremely worthwhile event, both from a personal and professional perspective. This year, the conference organizers are working hard to put together a program that both stimulates and educates, and which also offers plenty of opportunities for you to rub shoulders with colleagues and friends, known and new. A country steeped in history and tradition, China is also home to some of the cultural wonders of the world, of which the Great Wall is surely the highlight. Against the backdrop of Beijing ©¤ a city in full swing in preparation for the 2008 Olympics ©¤ I have no doubt you will find that your conference experience more than matches your last.
Having been involved in the IPBA' s management committees and council for more than a decade in various capacities, I am committed to ensuring that the IPBA remains an association that is valuable to, and valued by, its members. Through the Annual Conference, we hope not only to contribute to our members' greater professional understanding but also to their sense of being part of a broader and like-minded legal community.
I encourage all IPBA members to join us in Beijing for what promises to be a personally and professionally rewarding experience.
Jim FitzSimons

ABOUT THE CITY OF BEIJING
| |
Beijing, as the capital of China, is the nation¡¯s political, cultural and economical center and is unique in history, tradition and characteristics. About 3,000 years ago, a small city appeared on the present site of southwest on Beijing. From the 12th century to 1991, it was the capital of Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties. Now, it is shaping itself into a modern metropolis on the 16,800 square kilometers with a population of 12 million. You will find the city an unforgettable destination, with its ancient Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the numerous palaces telling legends of dynasties long lost in the mist of history. Moreover, the city has refreshed its complexion by the growing numbers of parks and recreational centers, the folk shows of holiday celebration, the splendid theatrical stages, and the grand city outlook. As the city for 2008 Olympic Games, it is being renovated and is developing in an accelerative speed. |
